Ilish Maach Bhaja

Ilish is one of most popular fishes of Bengal, being a seasonal fish it is relished all throughout the season in all possible variations. This fried recipe is a hard-core favourite side dish for rice & khichudi.


Hilsa fish - 6 pcs
Mustard Oil - 6 tbsp
Whole Green Chilli - 6-7
Turmeric Powder - 1 tbsp
Kasmiri Red Chilli Powder - 1 tsp
Salt - As required


1. Marinate the fish pieces with salt, turmeric, red chilli powder and 1 tbsp mustard oil for 15 minutes.

2. Add the remaining mustard oil in the frying pan. Fry the marinated fish pieces for 3-4 minutes on each side. Now add the green chillies and stir fry for 10 more minutes over low heat. You may need to sprinkle some water.

3. Pour the masala oil over your rice, mash the fried green chilli and mix with rice.
